The Stricto Sensu Graduate Program in Pneumology of the School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, FMSUP) was accredited in 1982 and comprises a set of scheduled activities, supervised by an advisor, which include and privilege teaching e research, always aiming to integrate knowledge. This program should be understood as a system of intellectual formation and, at the same time, of production of knowledge in each field. The program headquarters are located at the Heart Institute of the Clinical Hospital of FMUSP (Hospital das Clínicas da FMUSP, HCFMUSP).

In order to achieve these goals, the program in Pneumology receives as students professionals with medical degree and individuals with other professional qualifications interested in the respiratory field. The program is characterized by a high quality scientific production and is at present investing in increasing its internationalization. We currently have bilingual courses with foreign collaborating professors, foreign undergraduate students receiving research grants, in addition to students taking part of their PhD course in our program and part in a university located outside Brazil. Our students take PhD 'sandwich' courses in important foreign research centers and also participate in double degree programs. We have 16 advisor professors and are very well externally evaluated, being awarded grade 6 by the Capes evaluation system in the last 3 trienniums.
